Kin Park Saga Continues
The racing wasnÕt the only excitement as the controversy surrounding
the land deal between the local Parks & Rec (GVPRD) continues
to swirl in a muddy situation.
Last reports were a signed delivered deal. After a meeting last
week Vernon Agricultural Society member voted against the sale.
The membership concerns are over the use of the infield. Presently
ball diamonds use the space and the society would like to use
the infield to host Equine events.
ÔThe deals off,Ó said Jan White, society director. ÒWe discussed
it at length and our opinion is theyÕve reneged on the deal.Ó
Chair Barry Beardswell said that the GVPRD would have to make
a decision on the ball diamonds. ÒItÕs a matter of the financial
ability of the community and the demand and need.Ó
This is a headline issue. Morning Star Editorial suggested ÒRace
Track delays must be HarnessedÓ and the headlines were ÒMayor
considering arena optionsÓ The Sun Review said ÒDeal for Kin
race track in jeopardyÓ
The city needs a third of an acre for the new arena but the
deal also included all the Agricultural SocietyÕs land 7.5 acres.
The $200,000 deal would help the society which is feeling financial
pressures.
Society Chair Garry Saitz says itÕs a done deal if the GVPRD
says it will look at moving the fields if we can show horse
racing is a success. GVPRD director Gary Corner is optimistic
saying the board would make a decision. ÒNothing is deadÓ referring
to the purchase while Mayor Sean Harvey warned a new site might
be needed.
The issue is expected to be discussed at the GVPRD meeting July
19. It is important for horse racing and for the City of Vernon
to reach an agreement as quickly as possible.
