Little America Beyond Orville-
Americans Take Desert Park

It was a big day for the Americans that crossed the border at Orville to race at Desert Park on June 20. Six of the seven races at the Osoyoos track were won by American owned and trained horses. It was an exceptional day for owner trainer Nancy Burbank of Milo, Washington as her horses won three races in three starts. Two wins last week, makes it five wins in a row and vaults her into the Interior leading trainer position.

Burbank saddled Jim Winfrey’s Air Corn for his second win of the meeting with rider Laurina Windt. In the second Burbank’s fine mare Drone’s Dancer loomed boldly around the turn and won in hand for jockey Ron Bilodeau. It was the first of four winnings for Bilodeau, who now has 13 winners to lead the jockey standings. In the featured Rocking Chair race for seven year olds and upwards Burbank watched a gutsy performance by her own Rock’n Boy as he came on again after relinquishing the lead and set a new track record of 105:0 flat for 5 1/2 furlongs mark. Ron Bilodeau was along for the record setting trip.

Omak resident Frank Lay likes to nip over the border for a bit of his favourite sport. Lay shipped up Clever Timing who bested Stop The Fight and Join The Circus who were dead heated in the third. with Ron Bilodeau up in the third. Bilodeau was in the tack with another American winner taking the day’s only Quarter Horse dash with Amy Nelson’s Imitchintoberich.

The lone Canadian winner was Ken Shaw’s Love The Speed. It was Laurina Windt’s second winner of the day and trainer Ron Wilcox’s third of the season.

Real Kapital, who fell last weekend after another had horse fallen in front him, appeared none the worse for wear. That incident affected the betters however, Real Kapital was an upset winner paying $29.90 to win. Owned and trained by Earl Crofoot of Brewster, Washington Real Kapitol was the first winner in Canada for Ully Pliefke.

Riders Escape Injuries

A very short race card at Osoyoos didn’t lack action. In the first race rider Amber Dickinson was unharmed when her mount Heza Green slipped on the first turn. In the fifth and final race on the same turn a bit of luck saved two riders from serious injuries. Front running Shadow Wizard with Lisa Balsom went down, Brooke Mellish aboard Nasty Remark was able to jump clear but Real Kapitol with Sylvia Hoffman got tripped up leaving two riders and two horses on the ground. Fortunately the girl jocks were both up standing a short time later and received appreciative applause from the audience.

American trainer Nancy Burbank had a great day taking the first with long shot Air Corn and winning the third with favourite Rock’n Boy. Laurina Windt handled the reins on Jim Winfrey’s Air Corn and Ron Bilodeau scored with Rock’n Boy.

Titan Rocket was the hometown hero in the second. Owned by the Pendergraft’s P-1 Ranches, the 9 year old gelding was much the best and gave Ron Bilodeau his first winner of the day.

Runners trained by Eric Turner of Okanogan, Washington took the other two races. In the fourth a Quarter Horse dash, Rick and Bonnie Rawson’s I Wanna Be Like Mike, nosed out Sweet Gypsy Lady. Amber Dickinson was the winning jock. In fifth new jockey Christy Weibe went to winners’ circle with Harold Burbank’s Miss Native Knight.

Jeopardys Bunny Hops Home

Arnie Willis’ Jeopardys Bunny became the first two year old stake’s winner of the season, bounding to a two lengths victory in the North West Quarter Horse Futurity. The Cliff Wilcox trained runner made it look easy and provided Ron Bilodeau with his third winner of the day. Jeopardys Bunny took home the winner’s share of the $4,260 purse, the runner up was Buckey Stockwell’s Ima Emotional Girl.

Bilodeau’s other victories came in the second aboard Canyon Farm and D & S Fournier’s Emmamore and in the fourth he guided Bruce Scott’s Whos Smokin 109 to a 1/2 length victory.

Jockey Sam Shirley also had a successful day with two winner’s for Vancouver connections. In the fifth Cory & Sara Critchton’s Martina Syke’s romped home by 4 1/2 lengths for the win of her career. Trainer Henry Miller Jr. shipped Floyd Whitman’s Triedtestedandtrue for the last race and Shirley held on to win by a half length.

The first Arabian race of the season was an upset after Norman Poile’s NL Serbania coasted clear of Sundown Shalaums Penny and favourite Njutron. Local jockey Amber Dickson was in the irons.

Vancouver horsemen enjoyed more success when Phil Hall and Gary Fannings Breeze Marie won the second with Humberto Gomez.

OGOPOGO BLANKET FINISH

A wall of horses closed with a rush in the Ogopogo Derby at Sagebrush Downs on May 30th. A fair sized blanket could have covered the three year old Quarter horses as they hit the wire almost simultaneously. The first seven horses were all with in a length of the winner. Miss Flying Te Bar was a head in front and picked up the winnner’s share of the $7300 purse money for trainer lessee Eric Crofoot. Jockey Rick Robinson who won on the Don Ratcliff bred filly two weeks ago, kept Miss Flying Te Bar to task right from the bell. As the field of horses came down the stretch it was Miss Flying Te Bar being pushed by all seven rivals. At the finish Jim and Joy Hille’s Dream Ofa Doll was second a head in front of Dons Lightning Dash who finished third.

The seventh and final race of the day provided more rapid fire competiton as nine thoroughbreds hurtled round the turn and into the stretch in close quarters. The eventual upset winner, Royal Countess paid $53.20 to win and the triactor paid a handsome $872.00. Royal Countess is owned by Dennis and Irene Miller and was ridden by Amber Dickinson.

Trainer Sonny Johnson and jockey Umberto Gomez teamed up to win the third and fourth races. The three year old, Anthera was a 2 1/2 length winner in the third, while Double Distilled took the fourth by a 2 length margin.

Bill Smith’s old class horse Ice In Space looked convincing as he overhauled O’Kaneda in the stretch to win the fifth race with jockey Rockin Ron Bilodeau. Laurina Windt won the first race aboard first time starter Flying Damasca. The second race was won by Ralph Therres’ speedster Three For The Show with Sam Shirley in the Irons.
